Explode La Mode

Never is beautiful more beautiful than when it’s smart. So we’ll take our fashion show with a side of smart investment in programs for homeless youth. The upcoming Explode La Mode fashion show promises great runway looks from a cavalcade of Portland boutiques and designers AND is a benefit for p:ear, the Portland non-profit that connects to homeless youth through art and education (run by some fierce bright ladies who work their *sses off).

The show is Saturday, August 9 at 9 (how easy is that to remember?) at Someday Lounge (125 NW 5th). Hosted by DJ’s Kassette, Josh Jones, Copy (♥), and Joe Irwin and features looks from Dervishgirl, Frock, Garnish, Idom, Tumbleweed, Pin Me Apparel, Phlox, Dragonlily, Blue, Mabel and Zora, Oh Buggy, and Seaplane.

Arts and crafts for homeless kids? Why not send them home or work to better their home life instead of playing finger paint?

Well Mrs. Damian, your snarkiness makes it seem almost pointless to give you a reasoned response, but here’s a go:

First up, reducing p:ear’s programming to “arts and crafts” doesn’t capture 1/8th of what they do. Secondly, the word “homeless” means that these kids don’t have a home to go to. p:ear uses arts and other programming to non-judgmentally welcome kids (and they are kids, after all, do you remember being a kid?) into a safe space where they can connect in whatever way is possible to mentoring adults to access resources and services that yes, might lead, and have led to jobs and homes.

But don’t take it from us, check out pearmentor.org.
