Like the death of Mark Twain, reports of the death of innovative Portland-based eco-activewear company, Nau, have apparently been greatly exaggerated.  Nau, flatlining after not being able to secure additional financing for its aggressive expansion, shuttered its shops and put inventory on deep discount (no returns) on its website. Then, outta nowhere, comes Santa Barbara-based Horny Toad Activewear whose Portland connection is the brand’s only retail store, Lizard Lounge in the Pearl District. Nau becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of Horny and moves forward with a handful of key strategic and design staff, promising a leaner collection for holiday 08 and a new retail strategy. Nau’s Ian Yolles is quoted as saying the brand will grow “organically.” Meanwhile, Horny Toad expects to see a little of Nau’s sustainability rub off. Good all around.
