Portland-based Minor Poet is design duo KerryAnn Kimbrell and John Kwon. Kimbrell we had met as an Art Institute senior (mistaking her for her sister, a dancer, oops) with an impeccable little women’s collection she then showed at the Mercury fashion show last year. But Minor Poet is, for now, for men only.
We asked Kwon about how they met and how they work together. “KerryAnn and I met through my friend, Ned who is a musician and KerryAnn’s sister who’s a dancer,” he said. “Since we started working together, it’s been a very natural process for us. We look at things in different terms because of our training: KerryAnn comes to the work from 3D, apparel design, and I come to it from 2D, as a graphic designer. ”
Minor Poet launched with tailored men’s shirts (available at Seaplane) in sometimes surprising (calico and folk prints) but subtle prints in Fall of 07. With the kind of detail you’d expect from someone who apprenticed with Adam Arnold, Kimbrell finishes the shirts with French seams. They are available at Seaplane and made-to-measure. “We’re staying really focused,” Kwon says. “It’s easy to do this and that. We decided to start with a small line first, and then expand.” But we won’t have to wait long. They’re working on our first women’s line for Fall 08.
