Art For All!

Very exciting development noted by D.K. Row in the Oregonian. Beginning in spring, kids 17 and under will get free admission to the Portland Art Museum thanks to a $1 million gift from Gordon Sondland (Hotel DeLuxe and Hotel Lucia) and Katherine Durant. What does it matter to you? You’re not under 17. It matters so very much because children are the artists and patrons of the future, because we want to live in a Portland that is as thick with artists and art lovers and opportunities to view and purchase art in 10-20 years as it is today, because it’s about time that the Portland Art Museum, thanks to the new era under Executive Director Brian Ferriso, takes this important first step (Ferriso is also working to make a free day for adults as well) toward making one of our city’s art centers open to all (thus joining in a measured way, the Museum of Contemporary Craft with its free-admission-all-the-time). That Ferriso calls the move, “an expression of the museum’s core values,” is very encouraging.
