Loving Hecklewood with a one-two punch. It’s interesting to watch a streetwear label when it branches out from the p-t -and-h (printed t and hoodie). Where do you go next? What makes sense?
This fall Portland’s Hecklewood branches in very good ways, not only taking inspiration from the Great Northwest for their Native Cascadians collection, but going to the source and collaborating with NW apparel O.G.s Pendleton on 100% virgin wool scarves and an excellent grey and red wool hoodie.
“Much of the fabric, patterns, and graphics pay homage to Northwest history and culture,” says creative director Sam Huff. Of course, this is through the finely-tuned, if skewed Hecklewood lens. “A few pieces are modern interpretations of early 90’s grunge, and there’s a definite Native American skew to some of the graphics and printed fabrics.” And while Huff says the new jackets, in Carharttt bull denim in classic tan and black and high-end raw denim, “are based off of eastern-bloc military cuts,” he acknowledges they’re also honoring, “the work-wear aesthetic that is so prominent in the NW. ”
Also, Tanner, Hecklewood’s line of leather wallets and accessories, made right here in Portland, finally get their own online home. The Tanner line has expanded to include leather messenger bags, wallets and card cases, belts and lanyards. This season they’re laser etching graphics into the leather wallets, the abstract photo of a phone pole full of nails gets extra credit.
