Leanimal Fall 07 photo: Josh Elliott
Leanne Marshall’s idiosyncratic line Leanimal should liven up the runway proceedings this evening at Portland Fashion Week, her work swinging more toward the experimental end of the spectrum, in very good ways.
A Leanimal design is never simple. Marshall will not pursue one course, but incorporate multiple ideas into a single piece. The work has an ornateness that has not relied so much on fabric, print, or traditional embellishment, but on cut and/or a sculptural use of pleating (especially pleated ruffles), shirring, fabric insets, bubbled hems and sleeves. If you missed the love showered on Leanimal at 06 shows and are unfamiliar with her work, it compares to that of Emily Ryan and Liza Rietz, from whose aesthetic Marshall draws.
Leanimal, Portland Fashion Week Night Three, Sunday October 21. Doors at 6, show around 8 PM. Tickets available at the Portland Fashion Week website and at the door.
