Where’s Sam? in the media throng at Roots
Well, it’s official. As of around 5:45 this evening, Commissioner Sam Adams is a candidate for mayor of Portland. Adams announced his candidacy to several hundred supporters who filled Roots Organic Brewing Co. in SE Portland and spilled out onto the sidewalk. Adams was introduced by (among others) Commissioner Randy Leonard (who said he was speaking for Commissioner Sten as well who couldn’t be there) called Adams,”the guy that’s going to lead us into [being] a city that all of us are going to be very proud of.” Agreed.
Why this matters: Adams is committed to supporting arts and culture and the broader creative economy in Portland, not just in word, but in deed. His town hall meeting at the Gerding Theater at the Armory not long ago was a school session on how arts groups need to organize to get both public and government support. In addition to arts and culture, he’s right on the right issues (education, working poor, and growth)… and he’s got style.
WHAT TO DO NOW?
