Love it, talk about it, do it better. It’s industrial design night at Design Within Reach (1200 NW Everett) a week from Thursday on November 8, 6:30-9 PM.
DWR Portland has partnered with the Art Institute of Portland and IDSA to bring Knoll Inc’s Director of Research, Strategy and Media, Tracy Wymer, to talk about industrial design, past, present, and future. Very good. But what’s even better is that after the presentation, the audience will break into groups to brainstorm solutions for organizing, “our ever-increasing number of personal digital devices into a streamlined command center using a limited number of materials provided, including textiles supplied by Knoll.” Like to see some of the results of that exercise. (Ask us about power cord macrame). RSVP to portland@dwr.com by November 6. Space is limited to 50 people.

Like many of Portland’s most interesting design businesses Cecily Ink began with one very good product…one that in this case was never meant to be for sale. In 2006 Alex Wijnen created the Fresh Style Card File as a holiday gift for the clients of her graphic design studio Defteling Design. The FSCF is a box set of cards for various occasions from birthdays and thank you’s to love notes and apologies. When clients demanded to buy Card Files for everyone they knew, a business was born.
Wijnen’s fresh design vocabulary includes modern florals, patterns, and flourishes and good type in a palette of chocolate, sky blue, orange, and mustard. The designs are smart and feminine and never try to say more than whatever you have to write inside.
Less than a year after launch, Wijnen sells the Fresh Style Card File and sets of letterpress cards (with cool stamps to match) and gift wrap at more than a hundred stores across the country, here in Portland at Ecru (1215 NW 11th) in the Pearl and In The Bag (708 NW 23rd) on NW 23rd.
Now she’s collaborated with LeAnn Dolan from Ecru on Cecily Ink’s happy 2008 desk calendar available only at Ecru and online at the Cecily Ink website.
