galleryHomeland’s Scratching the Surface 07 festival opens today, August 3, on the Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade with performances and installations around, in, and concerning Portland waterways.

At 6 PM, the opening reception takes place near Festival Plaza on the Esplanade with a performance by visiting Brooklyn artist Ianthe Jackson. We’re especially interested in Grace Luebke and Ben Stagl’s “tumbleweed,” a 12-foot cluster structure made of balloons that will be launched into the Willamette River at 7 PM. With any luck and a favorable wind, it should be lovely. The river begs for a sculpture that responds to its flow and surface conditions.
At 8 PM, Bruce Conkle performs “Mountain Romance” near Ash St. Plaza (Ash Street Pier). And at 9 PM, visiting Brooklyn artist Tim Folland launches the Ultimate Ship, ” Ship Wrecked.”
