PLATFORM International Animation Festival is the first major animation festival in the US and it’s happening this June in Portland. The bulk of the programming happens June 25-30, mostly at Portland Center for Performing Arts, with “premieres and retrospectives, rare screenings, guest speakers, exhibitions, workshops with leading artists, parties, [and] a picnic.” Here’s a schedule for the four theaters…there are a gazillion films, plus works for the internet, mobile phones, &c. The picnic is sponsored by nascent juggernaut (oxymoron? you be the judge) Laika.
As part of the festival the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) is hosting Animation Inside Out, a juried international exhibition of animation installations at PNCA and throughout the Pearl District by artists from Brooklyn, Stockholm, Tokyo, Seattle, London, and Buenos Aires. From Portland,you’ll see Extended Play by Joanna Priestley and i-glasses by Hooliganship, as well as a work by PNCA’s Rose Bond to be projected on June 28 from the second story windows of the Maytag Building on 12th and Hoyt. UK artist Dryden Goodwin’s solo exhibition will be in school’s Feldman Gallery. And on June 28, PNCA hosts a street party to kick off a one night walking tour that features 17 site specific installations throughout the Pearl District.
