One of Portland’s favorite knitter/designers, Laura Irwin, just got the green light for her upcoming book deal. The book, yet to be titled, will be published by Interweave Press, and is slated to arrive in stores across the country for Fall 2008. Until then Laura will be madly preparing for the 20-something pieces that the book will outline patterns and stylings for.

Unlike traditional knitting guides, Laura’s book will center on unique embellishment- integrating hardware, chain, leather, and grommets into the projects. Much of the work will also be felted- one of Laura’s specialties. In fact, Laura has recently been experimenting with felting everything from bags to hats with much success.

Felting is the process where one knits a very large piece, then washes it in order to shrink it down into a dense fabric that is both warm and sturdy. Above all Laura is excited to collaborate with some of her favorite hometown photographers and designers, hoping to create a distinctive look for the book that is immediately recognizable as Portland style from head to toe.
Precious, Laura Irwin’s line of knit hats and bags, is available in Portland at Seaplane (827 NW 23rd).
