If you care about fashion, you not only covet it, get it, put it on, mix it up, but you look at the pretty pictures and read the words of those in the front rows of all those fashion shows twice a year in the world’s fashion capitals. The New York Times’ fashion critic Cathy Horyn is there on the front lines with lucid, sometimes edged criticism that cuts to the heart of what she sees in the context of both the history of fashion and the cultural moment for American women. If the emperor is naked, she’s not afraid to say it. And she’s drawn attention to a number of deserving designers. (And her new-ish blog is smart, a field for her to play outside of NYT column inches.)

Next week is a special opportunity for fashion-lovers and of special interest to designers. Horyn will be speaking on the “Duel Between Art and Commerce In Fashion” next Wednesday from 11:45-12:45 at the Art Institute (1122 NW Davis) . According to the Art Institute, she’ll, “address how fashion and fashion media is influenced by big business and celebrity, and why a new group of individually minded designers here and abroad [is] making a difference.” She may be addressing LVMH-fueled brands but the clash between the money and the art is universal.

You cannot just show up for this. There is limited seating. To go, you’ll need to email Allena Baker (abbaker@edmc.edu) at the Art Institute and she’ll put you on the list. See you there.
