Ross Langlitz
2007 marks the 60th anniversary of the legendary Langlitz Leathers. What the LA Times calls, “arguably the finest leather jacket in the world,” the Wall Street Journal terms, “The Rolls-Royce Of Leather Jackets,” and Esquire rightly identifies as, “the prototype,” is made on SE Division in Portland. For 60 years, the family business has built motorcycle leathers based on the designs and business model of founder Ross Langlitz. His innovations—much imitated but unequaled—include: a bodice cut longer in the back to cover the rider when he’s on the bike, horizontal zipper to keep out the rain, longer sleeves and zippered cuffs. And his commitment to custom fit, top quality, and jackets made one at a time have earned Langlitz Leathers their platinum reputation. The “Columbia” was Ross Langlitz’ first jacket, and it’s still the most popular. But if you want a Langlitz, you’re going to have to get in line. Even as worldwide demand has grown, the little workshop has continued to build only six garments per day.
