Very First Friday

Dave McKenzie

First Friday is off to a smashing start with interesting work at Small A Projects, Newspace, and 811 E Burnside spaces. At Small A (1430 SE 3rd), Dave McKenzie’s solo show TOMORROW WILL BE BETTER includes video (including one of McKenzie in a Clinton mask in Harlem) and sculpture. One piece we are primed to appreciate is “Yesterday’s Newspaper,” a folded newspaper on a plinth…the catch…every day there’s a new yesterday (but you got that, didn’t you?) which means one of two things: NY-based McKenzie comes to the gallery every day to refresh OR gallery staff by necessity become co-creators of the piece. This show is a great example of Laurel Gitlen bringing work in that can cross-polinate (inspire, call-out) our own roiling art scene (for lack of better word). Bravo.

Whitney Hubbs

Whitney Hubbs’”Nothing Happens in June” at Newspace (1632 SE 10th). Hubbs work is autobiographical, her photos visual analogs of Frank O’Hara poems, the little nothings adding up to absolutely everything. Kendra Binney

And at 811 E Burnside, Redux hosts Kendra Binney while at Grass Hut, you’ll find work by Lisa DeJohn and Roberta Aylward (plus Bwana Spoons promises cookies).
