one of two shows this month at Compound

APAK. Untitled. Acrylic and paper on wood.
Compound (107 NW 5th) is playing host to Mike Burnett’s “Neighborwood” show. He hand-crafted 50 wood figures that he sent out to 50 artists to customize for the show. The customizations ranged from paint to modifications that in Jay Schuster’s case go so far as a hinged head door that opens to show the gears inside. The project is a subtle play on the fact that often artists are asked to customize mass-made vinyl figures as a way of generating interest in the toy…here the figures are made one-by-one, and offered up for customization sans ulterior motive. Incidentally, ultra ?’s APAK.

Mike Burnett.
Leo Espinosa. Je Suis Un Garcon Moderne. Acrylic on wood.
