By all accounts, the fashion show celebrating the end of the inaugural Fashion Design Camp was a smash. Over a hundred parents and friends showed up last night at the future home of Tacee Webb’s (founder of Red Light Clothing Exchange) new retail space, Brother Sister (919 NW 23rd) to watch the thirteen girls aged 8-12 walk the runway in the garments they’d had a week to create.

“I’d wear that,” Seaplane’s Kate Towers said seeing one of the slip dresses the girls had made one day with the help of Towers and Holly Stalder. In addition to reconstructed dresses that had begun as slips, the girls had silkscreened t’s, built leather belts with Joel Vega, did a pop/punk tops and skirts spray painted with stencils, and each designed a sweet jersey top based on a pattern by designer Michele Bossart that she then made for them.

Throughout the week, the girls had learned about fashion illustration, retailing (with Blake Neiman-Davis), named their lines, filled a portfolio with designs, and did a photo shoot with camp co-director Logan Lynn. The walls of the space were lined with photos of the girls at work, their sketches, and the results of their photo shoots.

“I just started with this big piece of fabric,” said Hannah, when asked about the kimono-like sleeves on the dress she made. She went on to detail cutting, tucking, and adding a broach, “because the front went too low.”

The Willamette Week’s Byron Beck emceed the show and even Sam Adams showed up to support the youngest future members of the Creative Class.
