monkeys, novelists, siblings, directors, records, ice cubes

Perhaps you haven’t been in to the ‘box in a while. Perhaps you’ve had your eyes closed and have missed notice of this upcoming DJ series. Perhaps it’s time for a trip to 214 SW Broadway…especially if you’ve yet to see one of the more fetching additions to our list of PDX neon faves: the cute monkeys climbing the Saucebox sign. (We’re bullish on neon).
The We Aren’t Deejays Tuesday night series features high profilers like musicians Stephen Malkmus and Sean Croghan, Gus Van Sant (currently casting Paranoid Park), Plazm editor and novelist (Half-Life), Jon Raymond, and we’re super excited about foxy siblings Heather Larimer and brother Nick who together are Eux Autres with a new-ish French retro-pop album out.
If you’re nice to us, we’ll let you buy us a drink.

Atomic Ranch mag throws Pasadena over for PDX

A warm welcome to Jim Brown and Michelle Gringeri-Brown who’ve recently moved to town with their fab quarterly mag, Atomic Ranch, a celebration of post-WWII (1948-1970s) ranch homes and “Modernist tract homes” (interiors, renovations, landscaping and more). Brown is a photographer, Gringeri-Brown is a writer, and together they’ve been putting out Atomic Ranch since Spring 04.

Fitting they’ve come to Portland. Because ranch homes are fewer and farther between in PDX than in, say, California, these homes are often lavished with mid-century love here rather than taken for granted. We asked Michelle what brought her to Portland, (like we didn’t have an inkling). She cited the climate as well as, “all aspects of the greenness of Portland.” With a mobile business, they realized they could live anywhere and she’s wanted to live in Portland for a while. And did they find a great ranch home in Portland? You bet. Atomic Ranch is run out of their brick ranch in Eastmoreland.

Just in case you’re still planning your evening, recall that the new arts organization in town, Organism, is launching with a party at the Wonder Ballroom (128 NE Russell) featuring Small Sails, a video by Swiss art-star Pipilotti Rist (!!), and some band called the Dandy Warhols. Starts at 9 PM.
Ohm (31 NW 1st) is hosting a fashion show for Local.35 (you must get in there for their massive summer sale…35-50% off nearly everything) and Lit also at 9 PM.

Designer Dan Stiles responds to the ultra Q in which we ask Portland’s movers and makers a number of pressing questions

Not only did Dan Stiles make your favorite rock poster of the century, the one that almost makes you crash the car when you spot it in the window of the record store, he’s also been doing the kind of design work–from identity to interactive and everything in between–for both his own Stiles + Co. and sister company, Storyhat, that gets notice from mags like Print, Step, and How. Plus, he writes critically about design for Graphis, Emigre, How, Communication Arts and more which makes him all that much more our kind of guy. How did he find the time to answer the ultra Q? See his answer to the question about his secret superhero power. Read the rest of this entry »

David Eckard. Widow’s Walk. photo: TJ Norris. www.tjnorris.net
A steel dress/cage illuminated by votive candles. Artist David Eckard performed his “Widow’s Walk” this past weekend on the Eastbank Esplanade wearing this, his latest sculpture. Adore. Artist, curator, and writer TJ Norris, captured the photo. There’s more from Gallery Homeland’s “Scratching the Surface” this weekend, and Eckard stays busy with a performance at this Saturday’s opening party for the Oregon Biennial and his upcoming piece for PICA’s TBA Festival. Wait for it.
More on David Eckard.
