Duelin’ Fundraisers

We like performance…a lot. And we like showing support for the good guys. But why does it all have to be crammed into one night?

What’s an art lover to do. PICA (Portland Institute for Contemporary Art) has put us between a rock and a hard place in planning our Saturday night. Was it almost nine months ago we pencilled in our p:ear blossoms fundraiser, 6-9 PM at the Wieden + Kennedy atrium featuring performance by aerial dance group AVIATOR and music by Resolution 57? At the time we thought Pippa was nuts…we’re far too spontaneous to plan our Saturday nights that far in advance. Talk to us in April 06, we said. We’ve previously written about how heavily we’re anticipating Daniel Addy’s AVIATOR performance in that space. Plus, the cause is unbeatable: services for Portland’s homeless and transitional youth that start with drop-in art and extend in all directions.

Then we received the invitation to PICA’s TADA, a fundraiser in support of the 2006 TBA (Time Based Art…don’t you love it when the acronym’s fly) Festival which is only the performative high-point of our year with ten days of performance gluttony. (Incidentally, is TADA an acronym?) It’s tricky because the PICA patron dinner is also at 6 PM. The good news is that the juicy bits–Copy’s (Marius Libman, who is a stone fox) stripped-down electro-musica with its early New Wave naif vibe, the musico-performative antics of Jayme Hansen’s Fleshtone, and DJ Anjali and the Incredible Kid for your bhangra pleasure–don’t start until PICA’s Birthday Party at 10 PM.

Are we saying we can have our cake and eat it too? Something like that. But in the future we’re going to have to require that the right philanthropic hand talks to the left. Being a good neighbor, PICA, is the thing to do…and makes last minute Saturday night planning a lot easier. …hmm now what are we going to wear….
