DWR’s Got Game

We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again: you look like a winner. Contributor Harvest Henderson on testing your Modernist mettle…

With the wee champions of their Champagne Chair contest currently on tour, Design Within Reach has got a new game going. The Name That Chair contest is to the design addict what Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon is to the movie fanatic–and the winner gets this great Vitra Chair Poster.

Sure, you can spot an Eames or a Wassily in a snap. But before you start planning where you’ll hang your prize, be warned: These chairs are a pretty obscure. Entries are due Monday, so hurry up and start fillin’ in blanks.

Saturation

Portland Modern’s next issue is theme-based and while we were concerned about a theme based curation strategy (clown-art shows, anyone?) the theme and the team–”Saturation” and co-curators Matthew Stadler (Clear Cut Press) and Kristan Kennedy (PICA)–make for a swinging-for-the-fence collection of artists including Liz Haley, Eva Lake, and Chelsea Mosher who hasn’t shown nearly enough in Portland.

If you’re not familiar with it, Mark Brandau’s Portland Modern is the little glossie mag that’s a portable gallery showcasing emerging and unrepresented artists in Portland. Brandau’s had consistently great curators who’ve included artists that have gone on to get gallery representation and even find inclusion in the PAM Biennial.

The full lineup this time around will include: Roberta Aylward, Amber Bell, Michael Boyle, David Corbett, Alex Felton, Anna Fidler, Caleb Freese & Justin Gorman, Sarah Gottesdiener, Liz Haley, Levi Hanes, Mary Henry, Philip Iosca, Eva Lake, Jonathan Leach, Isaac Lin , Marne Lucas , Rae Mahaffey, Jeannie Manville, Chelsea Mosher, Daniel Peterson, Shawn Records, Spirit Quest (Khaela Maricich & Melissa Dyne), Amy Steel, and Casey Watson.
