Is that Rossy De Palma on the right in Anna Piaggi makeup? She’s just one reason to see Ramón Salazar’s film, 20 Centimeters, at the NW Film Center’s 29th Annual Portland International Film Festival.
It’s a “bittersweet musical comedy” (yes!) in which the hero(in) Adolfo, who lives his life as Marieta, is trying to save up money for a sex-change operation. The great news is that 1. whenever Marieta falls asleep, she escapes her drab life in dreams in which she’s starring in grand musical numbers, 2. Marieta is a woman (Monica Cervera) playing a man playing a woman, and 3. costumes! A friend brushed this off as a redo of Hedwig, but we’re there nonetheless. 20 Centimeters shows February 11th (9 PM) and February 12 (7:45) at the Guild.
There are also about a million other films in the Festival. But none of them have Rossy De Palma.
