MARCEL DZAMA Untitled, from Cabin of Count Dracula Suite. Marcel Dzama. 2005.

One of the art things we’re excited about this month (don’t get us started on Ovitz at the Cooley just yet, oh and Ghosttown) is the series of inks-just-dry 2005 prints by Marcel Dzama opening this Thursday at Augen Gallery (817 SW 2nd). There’s just something about the way that this Winnipegian combines the naif pen-and-ink style with a sideways sensibility (note how we refrained from using the oft-applied term “quirky” to refer to Mr. Dzama’s work) that floats our boat. If the flood of recent inky art has left us feeling drenched, Dzama reminds us of its initial freshness and appeal.

See also at Augen, work by the duo Susan Larsen and Patrick Collentine, plus W+K’s Jim Riswold. The opening reception is Thursday, January 5 from 5:30-8:30 PM.
