Sometimes it feels like a dirty trick, that fashion’s collective mind resurrects a look just after there is no possibility of any of us dragging the piece out of the back of the closet or cleaning up at the thrift store. Sometimes it feels like a dirty trick when a look whose success varied widely with the body that donned it back in the day is resurrected again. So with gauchos.
The first 25 pairs we saw on the streets were of the wide-legged jersey variety which can be horribly unkind in its loving embrace of below-the-belt regions. But glory be, then we saw not one, but two gals rocking a denim cross between gaucho and cropped pant (one was Jodie Gertzen of Salon 220, if we’re not mistaken)–narrower leg, less fabric–with clunky brown vintage boots and fitted tops. The look, for us at least, was saved.
Dear Portland, we love you and your stylish girls. Love, ultra.
