Our Affair

While we’re thrilled about the opening of PAM’s Modern and Contemporary wing, we’re even more excited about the art fair across the river. In its second year The Affair @ The Jupiter Hotel, shoehorns thirty galleries into the balcony rooms overlooking The Jupiter Hotel’s central courtyard turning the Jupiter into a dynamic temporary contemporary exhibition space. From the best of what Portland has to offer–Elizabeth Leach Gallery to Gallery 500–to interesting galleries from Los Angeles, New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Austin, The Affair is a unique chance to see a great swath of contemporary work in a day or two. And special projects by Austin’s Fluent-Collaborative, NY’s White Columns, Houston’s Diverseworks, and a one-woman show by British artist Mona Hatoum put on by Reed College’s Cooley Gallery are frosting on the cake.

After TBA, we reflected that half of what’s great about a condensed festival (as with an art fair) (as with a run of fashion shows, for that matter), is the high concentration of critical conversation that takes place within a short period of time. Yum. Three cheers for organizers, Stuart Horodner, PNCA instructor and former Visual Arts curator at PICA and Laurel Gitlen, proprietor of the new contemporary arts space Small A Projects, PSU instructor, and former gallery director for Savage Art Resources!

Like any good affair, this one is for the weekend only…you will be at the opening night party beginning at 10 PM on Friday night, then sleep in Saturday morning…the viewing hours are a hangover-friendly (or one-night-stand-friendly) 12-7 PM on Saturday and Sunday, October 1-2. If last year is any indication it’s exhilarating and overwhelming and not to be missed.
