Dances with Sewing Machines

As we head into these next ten or so days of performance and fashion (TBA, The Collections, Fashion Week) we are reminded of the brilliant Margretta Hansen and her July performance at Ten Tiny Dances IX in which she, on the tiny 4′x4′ stage, appropriated the physical vocabulary of cut and sew for her elegant, athletic dance. She finally unwrapped a long cloth from the bodice of her dress and sewed herself into the Singer. Here is a photo from the afternoon rehearsal and one from the evening performance before an SRO crowd at Bernie’s Southern Bistro.

An interesting thought, these intersections of performance and fashion…fashion shows as performance as much as marketing event, costume as ingredient in the stew of performance, day and evening wear as both costume and performance (we have to admit the audiences are as fun to watch as the shows).
