DJ Anjali’s 10

As TBA is rolling around, we were reflecting on the first time we heard DJ Anjali spin. Late at night at Machineworks, the entire building tilted toward the dancefloor and invisible strings animated every body in the room as Anjali threw on the first bhangra record and the dhols began.

From their sellout monthly dance party at the Fez (ANDAZ next on September 24) to Thursdays at Berbati’s and the montly ATLAS at Holocene (September 10), Anjali and her partner, The Incredible Kid, are the gold thread shot through the fabric of the Portland club scene.

See the duo at TBA again this year on September 16 from 12-2 AM at The Works (NW 18th & Northrup). See also, Kalga Kafe’s grand re-opening on September 2, Wooley at Wonder on September 7 at the Wonder Ballroom and a benefit for BARK at Holocene on September 17. For a full listing of upcoming gigs, see Anjali’s website.

Here’s hoping you catch Anjali when she’s not behind the turntables as well…one of Portland’s great beauties, she is also extraordinarily sweet. Here is Anjali’s list of her ten most wanted:

1. Mariachi pants

2. Pinstriped suit (I love women in men’s clothes…)

3. FAB INDIA white churidar (these are tussar silk from Bhagalpur mixed with Bhandara cotton)

4. vintage leopard print coat (tacky I know)

5. kathak jewelry (hand & head pieces) from Pakeeza, my favorite Urdu film

pakeeza

6. diamond nose stud

7. patent leather 60’s flats (perfect for dancing)

8. “antique” Indian chest (for my saris) I saw one at CostPlus that would work …

9. UMRAO JAAN on vinyl (1981 film starring Rekha; sexy Indian hearthrob). Go here to see all 21 photos!

10. H&M in Portland!
