Intersect, inspire, influence, and other words that start with the letter “i.” About the intersection of art and fashion design (or design in general)…because this is an intensely visual art weekend…what would it look like if a designer sought inspiration for a collection from the visual arts?

We are telling everyone we see about Fresh Trouble (4246 SE Belmont), this year’s warehouse show spilling over with a generous slice of Portland’s most interesting artists. It’s not too late to get into some trouble. There will be an open house on Friday eve from 6-9 PM and Saturdays and Sundays from 12-5 through October 9.
Curator-on-a-roll, Jeff Jahn (fresh off his Inertia show at Gallery 500) writes little poems playing with the words “fresh” and “trouble” that are beside the point. He may be trying to create a “Sensation,” but he needn’t. This is a solid show with good strong work that will stand on it’s own two pedestals, sans hype.
Our highlights:
TJ Norris’ “clear-cut”…the HO-sized white trees on the grid on the concrete floor…little ghosties. We’d never seen work like this from Norris before, but maybe we weren’t looking in all the right places. Now his upcoming show at Chambers Gallery is all the more exciting.
Katherine Bovee and Philippe Blanc’s “Legacy Boxed version #2″, simulated monitors, disc drives, cords and outlets crafted from corrugated cardboard and rope. We’d seen pics, heard tell of it, but seeing the execution of this brilliant concept makes the drive over to Belmont necessary.
Matthew Picton’s topographical relief “EXPE6ET” which was as visually interesting as the shock of recognition was strong upon ID’ing the material: florescent light diffuser grids.
…and curator Jeff Jahn’s extravagent drip castle, “I am Switzerland.”
Did we like Paige Saez’ “I Miss You” as much or more than the heralded Cao Fei’s “Cosplayers”? Yes, we did. Go Paige!
Question to answer: is that petrified cat pee? And we need to spend more time with Joe Macca’s epistolary piece and get to the bottom of Bruce Conkle and aluminum foil.
P.S. Don’t miss jumping in the big weenie. It doesn’t take a seven-year-old to show you how it’s done. But it helps.

One of our favorites, artist and now gallerist, Paige Saez, writes to say that the new gallery she’s opening with Paul Middendorf, Gallery Homeland, will be in a new location! Actually, it’s old new, the Hall Gallery space at 620 SE 3rd, just north of Montage. We’d follow Paige Saez anywhere. (Visual point of reference: that’s Paige on the cover of the WW Finder.)
Quick reminder, the opening show for Gallery Homeland features the work of Charles Moss, Zak Margolis, and Amy Steel. And at the opening night reception, tomorrow Thursday, September 29 beginning at 7 PM, hear three of Portland’s finest improvising musicians: Tim DuRoche (drums), Doug Theriault (guitar and electronic whatnot), and Jonathan Sielaff (bass clarinet).
Looking forward to coming Home(land).

While we’re thrilled about the opening of PAM’s Modern and Contemporary wing, we’re even more excited about the art fair across the river. In its second year The Affair @ The Jupiter Hotel, shoehorns thirty galleries into the balcony rooms overlooking The Jupiter Hotel’s central courtyard turning the Jupiter into a dynamic temporary contemporary exhibition space. From the best of what Portland has to offer–Elizabeth Leach Gallery to Gallery 500–to interesting galleries from Los Angeles, New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Austin, The Affair is a unique chance to see a great swath of contemporary work in a day or two. And special projects by Austin’s Fluent-Collaborative, NY’s White Columns, Houston’s Diverseworks, and a one-woman show by British artist Mona Hatoum put on by Reed College’s Cooley Gallery are frosting on the cake.

After TBA, we reflected that half of what’s great about a condensed festival (as with an art fair) (as with a run of fashion shows, for that matter), is the high concentration of critical conversation that takes place within a short period of time. Yum. Three cheers for organizers, Stuart Horodner, PNCA instructor and former Visual Arts curator at PICA and Laurel Gitlen, proprietor of the new contemporary arts space Small A Projects, PSU instructor, and former gallery director for Savage Art Resources!
Like any good affair, this one is for the weekend only…you will be at the opening night party beginning at 10 PM on Friday night, then sleep in Saturday morning…the viewing hours are a hangover-friendly (or one-night-stand-friendly) 12-7 PM on Saturday and Sunday, October 1-2. If last year is any indication it’s exhilarating and overwhelming and not to be missed.

Basil Childers, one of the photographers featured at q6 during The Affair.
With q6 talent in its new digs in The Jupiter Hotel, and in their very visual business, it’s natural Justin Habel and Jonny Shultz would get something good together to coincide with this weekend’s art fair, The Affair @ The Jupiter Hotel. Shultz has curated a show of many of Portland’s top fashion photographers including the brilliant Basil Childers whose photography elevates the pages of the Portland Monthly as well as providing poetic document of the work of numerous Portland performing artists and designers, and Paul Hernandez whose simply evocative editorial work is extraordinary.
The full line-up of talented photographers showcased at q6 will include Kristy Charroin, Paige Craig-Apodaca, Ray Gordon, Paul Hernandez, Marne Lucas, Manny Minjaurez, and Sophie Pangrazzi. The exhibition will be on view at q6 from 5-7 PM on both Affair days, Saturday and Sunday October 1 and 2.
