Our list of reasons to love Portland for the cultural sweetspot it is continues to grow this fall, from the Affair @ The Jupiter Hotel, PICA’s TBA Festival, PORT, The Collections, and now Show2005. A collaboration between Design Within Reach (in a smart move, forging connections with the local design community) and fix design studio (Chris Bleiler, who brought you the interior of clarklewis, among other gems), Show2005 is a juried exhibition of work by local furniture designers that will be on view for two days only, September 7-8 at Design Within Reach. If the submissions we’ve seen are any indication–including Brennan Conaway’s piece, “Ro(__)oM”–the show will be amazing, stretching from conceptual to the sublime.
Yes, you’ll be able to see the work on Thursday the 8th, but don’t miss the reception on Wednesday, September 7th from 6-9 PM. Not only will you get a first look at the work and be able to meet the designers, but check out this interesting list of jurors who will be there: Jeff Kovel of skylab design (designed the Doug Fir, Sugar Laboratories, East), Bill Fritz of Intelligent Design(who just opened a retail space in a Kovel designed building at SW 12th and Alder), Pete McCracken of Crack Press and Plazm media (go look at McCracken’s Colorface font), Stella Farina (formerly Executive Director of the PDX Fashion Incubator), David Boyd of Studio Alloy, Michael Hebberoy of ripe, clarklewis, and Gotham Building Tavern, and Craig Olson of Design Within Reach. The $10 you will be asked to donate at the door goes to supporting ShowArchive, which will do its part to increase exposure for local designers. Hear hear.
Interesting fashion aside, Jennifer Jako of fix design studio is putting together a fashion shoot featuring work by local apparel designers plus the fab furniture on September 8.
Design Within Reach is located at 1200 NW Everett in the Wieden and Kennedy building.
